As a photographer, I have observed pastoralism steadily disappearing. On the Hungarian Great Plain, I encounter fewer and fewer herders, and young people are particularly rare. The aging and decline of this profession is not only a social issue but also an ecological risk: sustainable grassland management is inconceivable without those who possess deep, place-based knowledge of the land.
